Zoe Saldana: I wanted Gamora to be sexier
It’s not easy being green — and Zoe Saldana certainly felt the pressure whilst filming Guardians of The Galaxy.
In Guardians of The Galaxy, set in deep space, Gamora joins American pilot Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), genetically engineered racoon Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper) and tree-creature Groot (voice of Vin Diesel) to escape capture after the theft of an orb that contains the powerful Infinity Gems, which grant the holder God-like omnipotence.
The film also stars Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Benicio Del Toro and Peter Serafinowicz, and has received rave reviews since it was released on Friday — currently it has 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Karen Gillan, who plays alien/pirate and villain Nebula, a similarly colourful assassin (this time with blue skin opposed to green), also discussed her own transformation — which required her to shave her head. It was something that she had no hesitation about: “I just got a call from my agent,” she told us, “and they said, “are you willing to shave your head for a role in the Marvel film? And I said, absolutely!”
Director James Gunn about spoke about how he knew former Doctor Who companion Gillan was right for the role straightaway, because of the humanity that she brought to the character — something, he points out, is a challenge when the character in question is a “cyborg.”
