Lancaster University bar to ‘fine students for being drunk’

A college bar at Lancaster University is to fine students £200 for being drunk, according to an email sent to students on Friday.

There is so far no explanation as to why Lonsdale Bar, The Red Lion, is to impose the controversial guidelines.

The email, sent by Lonsdale College Administrator Juli Shorrock, read:

“Students found in Lonsdale Bar or coming out of Lonsdale Bar who appear to be drunk to a Porter, College Officer or Assistant Dean will be required to identify themselves and will be summoned to a disciplinary hearing.

Fine for being drunk: Maximum £200

For buying a drink for someone who is drunk: Maximum £250

For selling a drink to someone who is drunk: Maximum £250

THIS WILL BE REPEATED ON OTHER OCCASIONS WHERE THERE ARE PROMOTIONS ON SPIRITS
(EG BUY-ONE-GET-ONE-FREE ON HOUSE SPIRITS) IN LONSDALE BAR.”

There has so far been no explanation as to how students’ drunkenness will be measured.

Students were quick to voice their disgust at the decision, with many flocking to the bar on Friday evening in protest, after Lonsdale College’s Facebook page posted the message: “Lonsdalions are you a parking ticket? Because you’ve got fineeeeeeee written all over you. Get your beautiful faces down to the bar tonight to show Lancaster what Lonnie students are made of.”

According to Lancaster Despatch Box former Lonsdale social secretary Alex Roberts, who works in the Red Lion, replied to Shorrock’s email saying: “I appreciate that you have to be responsible and look after the welfare of myself and my fellow students… (But) these students who allow themselves to get into this condition will not stop doing so simply because the college bar will fine them. They will simply get into that condition somewhere else. Somewhere that will be further from their homes, further from the support network currently provided by the college, and therefore further away from safety.”

Lancaster’s Vice President: Welfare and Community Tom Fox, President Joel Pullan and Senior College Advisor Laura McGowan are yet to respond to The National Student’s requests for comment.
